Nestled in the foothills of the North Cascades, about 40 minutes from Seattle and just 30 minutes from Seattle Paine Field International Airport, Granite Falls is the gateway to the legendary Mountain Loop and is the perfect homebase for your mountain adventures.
Yes! The town of Robe was occupied by hundreds of miners and railroad workers, but it vanished after rains in steep Robe Canyon washed away the train tracks that led to the town. When the precious resources that predicated the town were depleted, the place vanished.
Near Robe is also the former mining town of Monte Cristo. Once billed as the greatest silver district in the Western Hemisphere, Monte Cristo perished due to flooding and the collapse of infrastructure and resources. It is now desolate place filled with mining shacks and a reputation for paranormal activity. Visitors have reported hearing ghostly voices and experiencing unexplained cold spots. This ghost town is a must-visit for paranormal enthusiasts.
Well, we won’t flat out say the museum is haunted, BUT there has been known to be some paranormal activity in the building. The museum’s curator, Fred Cruger (yes, you read that correctly) says he often hears the sounds of picture book pages flipping when nobody else is around. Check out this spooky and interesting documentary on the haunted history of the museum...if you dare.
The Big Four Mountain has a microclimate on its north face that sustains ice year-round. The mountainside is marbled with veins of frozen water and patches of snow. It’s quite the sight. Note: Please never go in, near, or climb on top of the ice caves.
Absolutely! The Mountain Loop Highway is a real trip “out there”— a self-contained cycle, a circuit that takes you out to the wild woods before returning you to your urban origins. It’s a chance to see the heights of mountains, the depths of rivers, and even an ice cave. Granite Falls is a great jumping off point to get you headed in the direction of this fun and leisurely adventure of a drive. Read about our exploration this scenic byway.
Yes! Well before landing blockbuster roles on films such as “Guardians of the Galaxy” and “Jurassic World,” Chris Pratt of Lake Stevens painted and signed a mural on the wall at Omega Pizza and Pasta in Granite Falls. Pratt used to work at Omega Pizza during high school and was paid by the owners to create the now-famous artwork. Grab a pie and check it out when you’re in Granite Falls.
