Explore Seven Sky Valley Communities Through New Heritage Hunt
Free, all-ages adventure celebrates America's 250th Anniversary while encouraging families to discover local history and earn one of only 600 commemorative challenge coins.
As communities across the country celebrate America's 250th Anniversary, Sky Valley is inviting residents and visitors to experience local history in a new way through the Sky Valley Heritage Hunt, a free, self-guided adventure spanning seven communities along the U.S. 2 corridor.
The Heritage Hunt takes participants through Monroe, Sultan, Startup, Gold Bar, Index, Grotto, and Skykomish, where they visit historic landmarks, answer trivia questions, and document their journey with photo uploads along the way. Participants who complete the required stops will earn one of only 600 commemorative challenge coins produced in celebration of America's 250th Anniversary.
Designed for all ages, the Heritage Hunt encourages participants to slow down, explore together, and uncover the remarkable stories hidden throughout the communities of the U.S. 2 corridor.
Along the way, participants will discover the story of Marshall Percy Brewster, who was fatally shot while attempting to stop a bank robber, learn about one of the region's most fascinating historical moments, and uncover dozens of stories of pioneers, railroads, industry, innovation, and the remarkable people who helped shape Sky Valley. Every stop reveals another chapter of the region's rich and often surprising history.
Participants can complete the Hunt at their own pace in a single day, over several weekends, or throughout the summer, making it an ideal activity for families, couples, friends, youth groups, history enthusiasts, and anyone looking for a meaningful adventure close to home.
"The Heritage Hunt is a fun and engaging way to connect people with the stories and places that make Sky Valley unique," said Debbie Copple, Sky Valley Arts Council. "We hope participants create lasting memories while discovering so many fascinating stories."
Beyond the adventure itself, participants will gain a deeper appreciation for the communities that make up the U.S. 2 corridor while supporting local businesses, exploring parks, museums, and downtowns, and uncovering stories that many lifelong residents have never heard.
Participation is free and open through September 30, 2026. Registration is available online, and participants may begin their adventure at any time.
